In elite sport, greatness isn’t just defined by what happens on game day, it’s the decisions made in the quiet moments in between.

When one of the AFL’s true champions, Patrick Dangerfield, experienced a calf issue midway through the 2022 season, it wasn’t just a test of recovery, it was a masterclass in trust, precision, and collaboration.

As a key figure in his club’s modern era, Patrick’s influence on and off the field was immense. The team was contending for what would become a Premiership-winning season, and his return to peak performance mattered deeply.

But instead of rushing back, and going on ‘feel’ alone, the club’s medical consultant Dr Steve Saunders took a different approach. It was one grounded in both experience and objective data.

Using VueMotion’s biomechanics analysis, the team tracked Patrick’s stride length, stride frequency, and heel drop, key indicators of lower-limb readiness. While he felt ready to return, the data told a different story. Subtle imbalances in movement patterns revealed that a premature comeback carried unnecessary risk.

Together with the coaching and medical teams, Patrick embraced an “aggressive-conservative” plan: an extended mid-season “mini-preseason” designed to rebuild his base and ensure he would peak at the business end of the season. VueMotion’s insights provided the confidence to hold back just long enough for his body to fully recalibrate.

By finals, the results spoke for themselves. Patrick was moving better than ever, hitting speeds and movement metrics beyond his pre-injury baseline. The club’s data-driven patience had paid off.

For VueMotion, it was a proud demonstration of how objective movement data empowers better decision-making, not to restrict athletes, but to help them train harder, safer, and longer.

That season ended in the ultimate validation: a Premiership trophy and a champion performing at his best when it counted most.

Watch Dr Steve Saunders tell the story in the video below and get a first-hand look inside the science, strategy, and trust that helped guide one of the game’s greats back to peak.
