How the Canterbury Bulldogs profile athletes beyond the Force Plate

Force plate testing and GPS tracking provide Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs' Pathways High Performance Manager, Gurpreet Singh, with reliable indicators of an athlete's output capacity and external workload. However, these methods offer limited insight into the underlying movement strategy an athlete employs during on-field running. The integration of VueMotion's biomechanical analysis into the club's pathway programming has enabled performance staff to classify athletes by movement strategy rather than by chronological age or playing position, supporting a shift from templated programming towards development pathways informed by each athlete's individual biomechanical profile.

Gurpreet's pathway program employs a comprehensive testing battery, including force plate assessment, GPS monitoring, and standardised strength testing. What that testing doesn't answer is how a player moves once he's out on the field. “Jumping on a spot tells you how they produce, absorb and transfer force on the spot,” Gurpreet said, “but it's not telling you how the athlete is going to move on the field.” Closing that gap is what pushed him to build VueMotion into day-to-day pathway programming, not just the club's return-to-play process.

His answer sits between two extremes he'd rather avoid: a fully individualised program for every player, which he says would be close to unmanageable across a pathway squad, and a single generic program for everyone, which is what most gym and speed work still defaults to today. VueMotion gives him a middle path: sorting players into a small number of movement-type groups based on how they actually run, not just what they can lift.

Gurpreet Singh: "If you've got power, tendon-type athletes, and there's ten of them, they go into a certain bucket of strength based work. They'll do a generic foundation base, but then we add individualisation on top: if it's a muscle-dominant athlete, he needs to do a bit more power-based strength speed or speed strength work. Then you've got the guys who sit in the middle, on a bit of a wave between the two.  

The exercises in each group barely change: everyone still does lower and upper body push/pull movements. What changes is the intensity, the variation, and the emphasis sitting on top of that shared foundation.

An Academy-age prospect shows why the distinction matters. Gurpreet's staff had been training him on the same generic program as everyone else in his group: standard lifting, standard speed exposure on the field. It wasn't working. VueMotion showed a genuinely tendon-dominant athlete: springy, plenty of flight time in upright running, but no ability to coordinate that spring into something usable.

Gurpreet Singh: "He couldn't coordinate. He had a lot of flight, a lot of air time, shorter ground contacts, quicker turnover, more float in the air and he just couldn't put it together. He didn't know what the feeling was."

There was a second layer underneath it. The staff had assumed his problem sat in upright running, where his injuries kept happening, and had spent most of their attention there. VueMotion's numbers told a different story: he was hitting around 80 to 85% of his own max velocity in the first 30 metres, a poor accelerator being asked to compensate downstream of the actual weakness. The gym program hadn't been building the high-force, high-output acceleration strength his profile actually needed.

Gurpreet Singh: "It's not biomechanical. It's just understanding him as an athlete."

Once the program was rebuilt around what VueMotion showed rather than the standard template, it stopped resembling anything the pathway group had run before. “His program became so unique it doesn't even resemble anything we've done in the past,” Gurpreet said.

What profiling early actually buys you

Asked to compare two versions of the same 14-year-old, one who spends four or five years in a program shaped by VueMotion profiling, one on the standard path, Gurpreet doesn't frame it as a story about faster times or cleaner mechanics. It's a story about who gets missed.

Gurpreet Singh: "If you don't have VueMotion, I reckon it's almost a toss of a coin. Most of them get some benefit from a generic program. But there's a point, around 16 or 17, where they've got the foundation, and it's like, okay, now what? A lot of the time it just keeps being generic lifting, and then you get to 19 and go, oh, this is the top-level athlete he is, and we haven't supported him through that period."

Gurpreet is careful to distinguish early profiling from early specialisation. At 14–15 years of age, program emphasis remains on deliberate, general strength development, and he expresses caution regarding programs that impose elite-level specificity prematurely, citing the associated risk of injury and burnout in developing athletes. The principal benefit of early profiling, in his view, is that staff maintain a working biomechanical picture of each athlete from an early stage, so that when specificity becomes appropriate later in development, programming decisions are not being made from a standing start.

Buy-in, not just biomechanics

There's a second-order benefit Gurpreet points to. Players notice when their program is visibly different from the group next to them, rather than being told it's personalised while running the same session as everyone else. Splitting the pathway group into a small number of distinct programs, built off what VueMotion shows about how each type of athlete actually moves, gives players something concrete to notice, not just a coach's word for it.
